The Ideal Character Creation Process: A Pythagorean Dialogue

Image
Plato's Zaddy PERSONS OF THE DIALOGUE: PYTHAGORAS, CRATYLUS, OTHERS. PYTHAGORAS The setting is pseudo-medieval fantasy. There is magic, but it is rare and strange. He pauses meaningfully. His beard, a perfect isoceles. PYTHAGORAS The tone is light. Another pause. The viewer can somehow tell that he briefly contemplates the golden ratio before continuing to speak. PYTHAGORAS The default assumptions for your characters are that they are pseudo-European, competent, healthy adults. Each a cut above the average person in the milieu. Each of you, players, shall now choose a brief phrase to describe your character, as an acquaintance might know them. You may come up with your own, using this list as suggestions: thug wise woman the king troll ...

A Spell: Personal Hermitage

Image
Which Is a Simple, Yet Dangerous, Spell and Prayer Which Renders All Other Creatures Invisible and Increasingly Insensate to the Caster A. Hermit The life of a hermit is one valuable for personal and religious insight. It is equally inconvenient and difficult to return from once fully embraced. This Spell allows the potential hermit or confirmed misanthrope to dip a metaphysical toe into the chill bath of solitude. Let t equal the moment of casting. Let x equal zero. Let n x represent a period of time in the following sequence. n 0 : instantaneous. n 1 : one minute. n 2 : one hour. n 3 : twelve hours. n 4 : one day. n 5 : one half-month. n 6 : one month. n 7 : one year. n 8 : one lifetime (the expected lifetime of the caster). At time t+ n 0 , all other creatures become invisible to the caster. This does not apply in the reverse, nor do any of the additional, later effects of the Spell. Unlike facets of some other Spells, ‘creaturehood’ is not a Universally define...

A Spell: “The Episodic Encystment”

Image
Which Is a Difficult Prayer to Convert a Regretted Action and Its Consequences Into a Physical Object, To Be Hidden Any action, regardless of intent, regardless of thought or will behind it, has a Primary Actor * . In the first four dimensions of Mundanity † , the Primary Actor is bound to the actions it owns with guilt, pride, observation, and time: four dimensions of responsibility. In other spaces, these bonds are of silver cord. This magic pulls those cords together and in an arachnoid fashion webs and cocoons what they touch. All conscious knowledge and evidence of an action is removed from experiential reality and replaced within one object thematically related to the act. This object, now known as the Episode, must be no larger nor heavier than the target of the spell can manipulate with one grasping appendage, and is often a pound of flesh. As long as the Episode is hidden by the Primary Actor, the Action occurring within the Episode ‡ remains outside of reality. If the o...

Observations On the Basilisk (Basilicus basilicus) and an Abbreviated Introduction To the Basilisk, Asterisk (Basilicus basilicus asteriscus) [Basilisk*]

Image
The creature known as Basilicus basilicus , commonly referred to as the ‘basilisk’, has many recognized subspecies. Doubtless some of these are completely fictional, the result of mistranslations by wine-crazed calligraphers and wild imaginings by explorers to uninteresting realms, but zoölogical consensus and the preserved archives of no less than Pythagoras himself hold that the basilisk certainly does exist and is wildly dangerous. The details of the specific basilisk at hand pertain only to the extremity of degree to which that ‘flavor’ of basilisk holds fatal potentiality. That miniscule basilisk which wears a petite royal crown may cause painful poisonous death to those who lock eyes with it, or with a glance. The basilisk which hatches from inauspicious hen’s eggs to despoil plant life and cause death at a touch may or may not also kill the close relatives of its ruined victims. Then also, the basilisk which poisons as well as breaks stone upon touching it with its breath may or...
